Home Reading Log (HRL)
Procedures
All students are to
read for 20-30 minutes every night. The
HRL requires them to write down the date, title, author, and pages of the
book(s) they read. On Thursday evening, after reading, students are to write a
response entry using the format below. The response should be based on the
reading that was completed at home. If a student reads more than one book
within a week, they need to write down the title and author of all the books,
but they only need to do a response on one book.
This assignment will be
used to keep track of students’ 30 book goal. All students will be required to turn in a HRL
every week, even if they have already reached their 30 book goal. It is okay if a student does not finish a book within a week, as long as they have read every night and completed a response.
Please use lined
notebook paper, and answer one of the prompts below. Your response should show
that you spent time thinking about what you read. Although a certain length is
not required, your response should fully address the topic chosen. The HRL is
due every Friday morning.
Response Topic Choices:
1.
Tell
about your favorite part of the story in detail. What happened?
Which characters were involved? Why
was it your favorite part?
2. Tell about the characters in the story.
Describe who they are, what they look like, how they feel and how they act. How did they affect the story?
3. Tell about the setting of the story
(when and where it happens). How did the
setting impact the story? Would you like to visit that place? Describe why or
why not.
4. Does the story remind you of something
you have read or experienced before? Write about your connection to the story
using a lot of details.
5. Identify the genre of your book.
Explain the features that helped you decide which one it is.
Follow this format on
your lined paper:
